Sealing and Expungement of Criminal Records

picUnder Massachusetts law, expungement of criminal records is only permitted under limited circumstances, however it is very likely that you may be eligible to obtain a court order sealing your criminal records. If your criminal records are sealed, a Criminal Offender Record Information (?CORI?) search will bring up no adult record. The search will not even show that you have sealed your criminal records. Furthermore, if you records are sealed, when employers, lenders and other individuals ask you if you have a criminal record you can legally answer that you do not. Only law enforcement and a select few governmental agencies, such as the Department of Youth Services, will be able to see that you have sealed your records.

If your records are not sealed, a CORI search will show all arrests and charges that were brought against you ? even if the charges were dismissed or you were acquitted. This can create difficulties in applying for a job, a loan, financial aid or an apartment.

You should not let an arrest or criminal charges haunt you for the rest of your life. Contact our criminal defense lawyers today to learn whether it is feasible to seal your criminal record. Our criminal attorneys understand the process for sealing criminal records, and know what needs to be done in order to increase the likelihood of successfully sealing your criminal record.
